Herring boom: key factors 1880s-1820s

1886

The Crofters’Act was introduced. Lairds were less controlling and crofters became owner occupiers, which meant fishermen could choose to go to the herring and potentially earn more money.

1887

Transition by the Scottish curers to sell herring by auction.

1888

Bressay fish offal reduction plant was in operation.

1901

Lerwick Fish Market was established at Freefield, introducing an auction which gained fishermen a fair price for their catch.
